Mar. 9th, 2014 - Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey Premiere

Would you love to watch the highly anticipated new Cosmos series with other people who appreciate science and reason? Join us for the premiere episode of Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey. The new documentary series explores how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space and time. It is a follow-up to the classic 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which was presented by Carl Sagan. The new series' presenter is Neil deGrasse Tyson. Let's consider it to be similar to a midnight movie premiere... except with fans of science getting their geek on instead.

A variety of hot teas will be available and people are welcome to bring snacks to share. The show starts at 7:00 pm, but we are asking people to arrive at 6:30 to settle in and talk before the show starts.

When: Mar. 9th at 6:30 pm

Where: Directions to Jesse and Velvet's will be provided to everyone who RSVPs.

Mar. 8th, 2014 - Hiking the Pet-e-Kes Trail

It's time to emerge from winter's hibernation with our first hike of the year. We'll be hiking the Pet-e-Kes trail just off Monument Road in the Redlands area of Grand Junction. The trail is rated as easy-moderate with a distance of about 3.3 miles. It has about a 400 foot elevation change. We'll be doing the hike at a leisurely pace and well-behaved/socialized dogs are welcome.

We will meet at the Tabeguache Lunch Loop Trailhead parking lot. Be sure to arrive early or on time, as we will depart promptly. Please bring sufficient food and drink to meet your needs and anything else you might require. This is a fair weather event and will be postponed in the event of poor weather conditions.

Mar. 2nd, 2014 - The Root of All Evil?

Join Humanists Doing Good as we show part one of the Root of All Evil? In this two-part documentary, Oxford Professor Richard Dawkins examines how religious faith is gaining ground in the face of rational, scientific truth. The program takes you to some of the world's religious hot-spots, both in America and the Middle East. Dawkins meets with religious leaders and their followers, as well as scientists and skeptics to examine the power of religion. Interviews with former Pastor Ted Haggard (Colorado Springs), the novelist Ian McEwan, the former Bishop of Oxford, and others offer valuable insights into the global impact and consequences of faith in the 21st century.

We plan to show part two in the future, but want to provide time for discussion after viewing the first part of the documentary. Be sure to catch part one so you can join in the discussion. For those who are unfamiliar with Richard Dawkins, this documentary can serve as a good introduction and a beginning point.

When: Sunday, March 2nd at 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Where: Mesa County Central Public Library's Community Meeting Room (443 North 6th Street, GJ)
