Oct. 23rd, 2014 - The Invention of Lying

We'll be watching the movie The Invention of Lying and using remaining time after the film for discussion of the film and its concepts.

The Invention of Lying takes place in an alternate reality in which lying--even the concept of a lie--does not even exist. Everyone--from politicians to advertisers to the man and woman on the street--speaks the truth and nothing but the truth with no thought of the consequences. But when a down-on-his-luck loser named Mark suddenly develops the ability to lie, he finds that dishonesty has its rewards. In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark easily lies his way to fame and fortune. But lies have a way of spreading, and Mark begins to realize that things are getting a little out of control when some of his tallest tales are being taken as, well, gospel. With the entire world now hanging on his every word, there is only one thing Mark has not been able to lie his way into: the heart of the woman he loves.

Please feel welcome to bring food and drinks for the show.

When: Thursday, Oct. 23rd from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Where: Garden Room at The Commons (625 27 1/2 Road, Grand Junction - park at rear of the building and enter through the Garden Room entrance)

Please note that this event is not open to the general public and is intended only for participants of Humanists Doing Good.

Oct. 18th, 2014 - Free ACLU Know Your Rights Training

Following the recent events in Ferguson, Missouri and all around the country, it’s more important than ever for all citizens to be prepared and know how to assert their constitutionally-protected rights when dealing with law enforcement.

The ACLU of Colorado, Humanists Doing Good, the Hispanic Affairs Project, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Valley will present a Know Your Rights Training on Saturday, October 18th at 7 pm at 536 Ouray Avenue in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The Know Your Rights Training will be taught by ACLU Speaker Kathleen Hynes, PhD and will provide information and simple steps, based on constitutional protections and criminal case law, for handling interactions with police and other forms of law enforcement. Dr. Hynes will expose commonly believed myths and teach the realities about our constitutionally-protected rights. Participants in the training will learn how to keep their cool and assert their constitutional rights, if necessary, when stopped by law enforcement, as well as how to report instances of police misconduct.

When: Saturday, Oct. 18th at 7:00 pm

Where: Unitarian Universalist Building at 536 Ouray Avenue

Click here to RSVP on our meetup site.
