Jan. 17th, 2015 - Women Are The Change

Humanists Doing Good will be showing Women Are The Change, a brief documentary about how the education of women can change a continent. The film features ordinary girls from Sub-Saharan Africa struggling with the traumas of war, loss of innocence and loss of parents and showcases their transformation into extraordinary women. The documentary was produced by one of our members, Linda Stout. Linda will be present to answer questions and speak about the documentary and the women it follows.

This film grew out of Linda's passion to empower women to become leaders and policy makers. Originally, she sponsored a small program in the U.S. for African women to teach them leadership skills and to give them a wider view of their place in the world.

Linda was so inspired by knowing the women who attended her program that she decided to film a documentary about them so that others could know their stories.

The film includes interviews and scenes in rural villages as the story unfolds of how educated women give back to their communities.

This showing is free and open to the public.

Jan. 3rd, 2015 - Social Brunch & General Meeting

We'll be starting off the new year with a general meeting and social brunch at the Garden Room. We are hoping to have the American Humanist Association's Volunteer Regional Grassroots Coordinator for the Mountain Region, John Petersen, as a special guest (travel over the Rockies permitting). Please bring a brunch item to share, if possible. It is helpful if you can post what you plan to bring so that we can make sure we have the basics covered. We'll discuss your ideas for the future, enjoy some delicious food and welcome any topics you might want to make people aware of or discuss. Have a project that you'd love to see us do in the future or know a situation that could use our help? Come and let us know about it. Our brunches are also a fantastic way to get to know more about each other or to meet new people.

When: Saturday, January 3rd from 10 am to Noon

Where: Garden Room at The Commons (625 27 1/2 Road, park and enter at the rear of the building through external Garden Room entrance)

Dec. 25th, 2014 - Holiday Treat Delivery

We are seeking volunteers who can help deliver treats to people throughout the valley who we find working or otherwise away from their families during the holiday. Our goal is to surprise people with our baked treats and brighten their day as a good deed. Volunteers who have done this in the past have had a great time and it is always nice to make others smile. We ask that anyone who would like to volunteer to deliver treats please try to also attend the treat packaging party on the 20th so that you can pick up your treats for delivery at that time.

You can choose to deliver your treats any time before 5:00 pm and we ask that you coordinate with us to cover a particular area of town that other volunteers will not be covering.

When: Thursday, December 25th (any time before 5:00 pm)

Where: Throughout the Grand Valley
