May 9th, 2015 - Volunteering to Help Build Monarch Butterfly Way Station

A few volunteers from Humanists Doing Good helped with the initial steps of building a monarch butterfly way station that the butterflies can stop at on their migration path to Mexico. Volunteers weeded and tilled the ground where the way station is being created at the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens. The next step will be planting the area with plants that are preferred by the monarch butterflies.

May 7th, 2015 - Volunteer for Fire Preparedness Campaign

The local Red Cross Chapter is currently working on a home fire preparedness campaign to lower the amount of house fires that occur in the Valley. Red Cross is accomplishing this by going into homes and testing and installing new smoke detectors. Humanists Doing Good will be assisting on Thursday, May 7th and we will be canvassing door to door in 3 neighborhoods in Fruita to get the word out about what will be happening in there area on Saturday, May 9th. We will be meeting at Fruita Monument High School at 6:00 pm.

When: Thursday, May 7th at 6:00 pm

May 2nd, 2015 - UniversiTea: Beliefs

Join us for a UniversiTea on the topic of beliefs. UniversiTeas are an opportunity to discuss typically challenging and philosophical topics in a relaxed environment. We will begin with the question of "How do people arrive at their beliefs and what does it take to get people to change their beliefs." We can discuss how we have arrived at our own personal beliefs and what factors may or may not have caused them to change over time. We try to let conversation flow in whatever direction it naturally goes from the starting point.

We will likely also show a brief video about neurotheology and/or a helmet that can alter our perceptions.

We will provide a variety of hot teas and you are free to bring any food you might like to share or want available for yourself during the discussion.

(Note: We changed from having the Mexican brunch due to the fact that weather has caused us to cancel some events and the result would have had us inadvertently having three food-focused events in a row.)

When: Saturday, May 2nd from 10 am - Noon

Where: Garden Room at The Commons (625 27 1/2 Road, GJ - Park in the parking lot at the rear of the building and enter through the external Garden Room entrance)
