Oct. 18th, 2015 - Roadside Cleanup of Adopted Highway

Join everyone as we clean our adopted stretch of the I-70 Business Loop just west of Mesa Mall. Our stretch of road is a little over 2 miles long so we can certainly use as many volunteers as possible. We also like to have a bit of a treasure hunt each time we go out to see who can discover the most unusual or interesting items.

We supply trash bags and safety vests. We recommend that you bring your own water, sturdy footwear and gloves and consider things like sunscreen, hats, etc. We ask that all volunteers who wish to participate watch the two brief safety videos found at the following address:

https://www.codot.gov/programs/adopt-a-highway/videos.html

When: Sunday, October 18th from 10:00 am - Noon

Where: We will park in the West Gate Inn parking lot near the Acorn convenience store/truck stop. This is near the I-70 overpass.

Oct. 10th, 2015 - Astronomy Night + War of the Worlds

Join us as we venture up to the Saddlehorn Picnic Area on the Colorado National Monument to gaze upon the stars with the Western Colorado Astronomy Club. If the weather cooperates, the dark sky evening will offer views of deep space objects such as blown-up stars, nebulae and galaxies. Before viewing through the telescopes, we will venture into the nearby picnic area to listen to the original 1938 radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds. Listen to the broadcast that terrified our nation and sparked fears of the end of the world. Consider bringing a blanket or sleeping bag to cozy up in while beneath the stars. You can sit at the existing picnic tables or you can feel free to bring your own camp chair. You may want to also have a flashlight/headlamp available to use.

An entrance fee to the Colorado National Monument will be required, but there should be opportunities to carpool with others. Please park on the west side of the Saddlehorn picnic area parking lot.

This event is highly dependent upon the weather and it is possible that we may have to plan it for another evening if the weather is bad.

When: Saturday, October 10th at 7:00 pm

Driving Directions:

Westbound on Highway I-70 towards Grand Junction, Exit 31 (Horizon Drive): Follow signs through Grand Junction to the east entrance. The visitor center and Saddlehorn Picnic Area are 19 miles from the east entrance.  Turn right just after passing the visitor center to reach the Saddlehorn picnic area parking lot.

Eastbound on Highway I-70 take Exit 19 (Fruita): Turn south on Highway 340 to the west entrance, which is approximately three miles from Fruita. The visitor center and Saddlehorn picnic area are four miles up from the west entrance. The picnic area parking lot entrance is just before reaching the visitor center.
